Many anglers and hunters believe lunar phases significantly impact animal feeding patterns. The Solunar Theory, developed by John Alden Knight in 1926, provides a framework for predicting peak activity times based on moon position.
Solunar Theory Basics
Solunar theory suggests animals are most active during moon rise/set and when the moon is directly overhead or underfoot. Major periods (moon overhead/underfoot) last about 2 hours. Minor periods (moon rise/set) last about 1 hour. Activity peaks are thought to be stronger during New Moon and Full Moon phases.
Best Moon Phases for Fishing
Many anglers report best results during the 3 days before and after both New Moon and Full Moon. During these periods, tidal movements are strongest, potentially stirring up food sources and triggering feeding activity. The Full Moon may extend feeding into nighttime hours.
Moon Phase and Deer Hunting
Hunters often note increased daytime deer activity during darker moon phases when nocturnal feeding is limited. During Full Moon periods, deer may feed more at night and rest during daylight. Weather and other factors often outweigh lunar influence.
